"Asiatic raccoons" are not dogsThe Asiatic Raccoon (Nyctereutes procyonoides), also known as Finnraccoon, is legally farmed for fur in several European and Asian countries. The term "raccoon dog" is not used by the fur trade and is misleading. Although the Asiatic Raccoon or Finnraccoon is part of the family Canidae, like a great many other animals, it is quite different to a dog and should not be confused with it. Its behavioural and anatomical characteristics are so unique as to qualify the species for its own genus listing (Nyctereutes). |
